A bungalow from the 50’s has been carefully transformed into a contemporary villa. Villa Wolff honours its past while reconnecting with its natural setting in Bosch en Duin, in the province of Utrecht.
Superuse was asked to compare renovation versus demolition. An inventory of the existing structure revealed strong foundations and load-bearing walls worth preserving.
A new roof was introduced to replace the failing original — designed with improved insulation, capacity for solar panels, and a green roof. Its geometry echoes the house’s original silhouette, simultaneously acknowledging the architectural language of the 1950’s and optimising rainwater collection.
The home achieves a comfortable and resilient climate strategy. A heat pump and upgraded insulation are combined with a south-facing cantilever, which provides shading in summer yet admits low winter sun. The green roof adds biodiversity while stabilising interior temperatures.

50’s bungalow reimagined as a villa in dialogue with its forest surroundings.
Spatially, the design reflects the clients’ daily lives. The newly added floor serves as a private sleeping area, while the ground floor offers space for living, working from home and guests.
Every space is orientated toward the southern garden and surrounding forest, including those at the front, reinforcing a seamless dialogue between inside and outside. Large windows frame views from treetop to forest floor, ensuring the residents experience seasonal changes even while working from home.
A collective building experience.
Biobased materials were central to the renovation. The structure was built using timber, as were all the exterior window frames. Hempcrete was used in two different ways: both as insulation and in solid exterior walls. The use of hemp — a CO₂-storing material — embodies Superuse’s commitment to reducing embodied carbon in construction.
The project also became a collaborative process. Under the guidance of the hempcrete contractor, both the residents and the Superuse team helped with tamping hempcrete on site, turning the construction into a collective building experience.
