ProRail prototypes

October 2024

Over the next few years, ProRail will realise 1500 sustainable rail-related buildings based on the ambition of modular, circular, energy-neutral and fauna-inclusive construction. Superuse may contribute to this, designing two facade variants and water retention roofs.

_ Facade variants
We have worked out two designs for the facade of the technical buildings along the railway:

1_ A facade with a residual batch of platonised wood
2_ A facade of steel contour plates, normally industrial waste

With attention to various birds, insects and bats, we have made both facades into an animal-friendly design that is sustainable and long-lasting. ProRail now offers our designs to municipalities.

_ Water retention roofs
We have worked with a variety of suppliers to put together four types of retention roofs to show the possibilities:

1_ Made from raw materials that are as natural as possible
2_ As efficient as possible in the production process of components
3_ From circular and recycled materials
4_ As large as possible in water buffering

The prototypes all have their own vegetation and will be monitored for a year on growth, soil life, water buffering, maintenance and management, among other things. The lessons will be taken into account in the choice of roofs that will be applied to the new rail-bound buildings.
