Buitenplaats Brienenoord is a place for people of all ages to think, play and work about and for the future of Rotterdam.
Foundation Grondvesten presented Superuse with an interesting challenge. The goal was to realise a new camp on the island of Brienenoord under the name Buitenplaats Brienenoord.
Besides a requested ‘social return on investment’ and a minimal ecological footprint, two other factors were guiding the project:
_ 1 The island is accessed by an old bridge that can carry a maximum load of 15 tonnes. A cargo truck easily weighs 19 tonnes without load.
_ 2 The funds raised lead to a very challenging budget. We reused the materials as well as the foundations of the old Kamphuis as much as possible, serving as input for the new building.

Located on an island in the Meuse river, Buitenplaats Brienenoord now has a completely self-built circular building where programmes are created with and for the city. Social, cultural, culinary, artistic and educational activities are all intertwined. From cultural education to workshops; from theatre performances to restaurants; and from a table-sitting office to a workshop. It all becomes possible here. This way, the users rehearse together for a possible future of this place, of the city of Rotterdam and of the world.
90% of the old building has been reused.
